This is a strong effort from Batailley and may usher in a new era for this fifth-growth chateau which is capable of producing great wine. Château d’Armailhac 2008 offers elegance with fine tannins and a nicely weighted acidity. After decanting there are aromas of blackberry, charcoal, toast, peppercorns and earthy notes. This vintage is drinking well now, and will cellar for another decade or so.

To celebrate Sir Winston Churchill’s fondness of their Champagne, Pol Roger created the

Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill. These lovely vintage offerings are made with a secret blend of their finest grapes which are matured for longer than the other vintage expressions in their range. Churchill was very much a fan of older wines, and once said “My tastes are simple: I am easily satisfied with the best.” Pol Roger have honoured these notes with this Champagne.

Femme de Champagne is the result of a delicate marriage of the best parcels of grapes from the region. Fine bubbles gush through the wine, bright with hints of the yellows and greens of springtime, and lit up with the sparkle of silvery moonbeams. On the palate,a bewitching flavour of ripe hazelnuts surrounds the floral fragrance of honeysuckle, followed quickly by the delicate notes of crystalized mandarin orange peel.

Oak ageing is evident on the nose, with a character hinting at slightly browning apples. Warm, full and fleshy on the palate – there is admirable freshness here, as well as a satisfying degree of complexity, with a zesty lemon sherbet and some brioche character.

Labelled as a blanc de noirs, this has a blend of 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Pinot Meunier. It has the weight and the richness you come to expect from a Champagne made only from red grapes. Well textured and also full of rich apple and pear fruits.
